User Reviews about Samsung PN50C450 50-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV (Black)

Bought another used samsung for 600.00 can't beat it. Plasma is not my first pick, but this is great so far. Little glare though. -- samsung is my favorite brand
This TV is great. My friends all have 2+ years old LCD's that are currently within the same price range as this TV and the picture on this TV blows them out of the water. The price just could not be beat at all anywhere. The sound on this TV is okay. I really don't use the TV's speakers because I have my computer hooked up to it using a DVI to HDMI cable. I really like the options on this TV such as the option to allow for several timers to be set for turning on and off the TV that way I remember to leave for work early. I have my TV mounted on the wall and the back plugs are a little difficult to reach when it is mounted but the side hookups work fine for my purposes. The stand that came with the TV is very sturdy I really liked it. When I purchased this TV I had only had 1 other plasma (Pioneer 52") and I really did not feel safe with having that on the stand that came with it. I live in a 600 Sq.Ft. apt. and this TV really does not take up much room. I also did a review of my wall mount. If your thinking of getting one I suggest getting that one. -- First Plasma TV
I looked up TONS of TVs before deciding to go with this one and I'm so happy with the decision. I read about 720 vs 1080p, plasma vs lcd, went to 3 best buys, a target, a costco, and a walmart and settled on this one! if I was watching blu rays or playing video games all day I would have gone with the 1080p, but since I mostly use it for TV and HD movies (not blu ray) it just wasn't worth the extreme price difference. Plus, the picture looks great whether I'm watching something in 720p or 1080p so I think it makes sense to save the extra $300 or so. I don't know what the power consumption is like yet because I haven't gotten an electric bill since I've had the TV. Delivery was easy and fast. I decided to spend a little more to buy from Amazon instead of another cheaper online retailer because I was more confident that there would be no problems with the product or delivery through Amazon. The best buy sales person said he thinks panasonics are better plasmas but after looking at so many TVs my boyfriend and I agreed that the Samsungs looked a lot better to us. We thought this was the best TV in the store besides the LED TVs (which are way out of our price range right now). Overall a great TV for the price. You'll love it! -- LOVE my new TV! =)
Got a great deal at Amazon, compared to Best Buy, saved over 200.00...anyway, TV has an acceptable picture, but not as good as LED OR LCD, easy to set up, however, if i have a complaint, its the sound.....tried many settings, but i am not satisfied....sound is too whiney, crackles, and at one setting, heavy , deep Base..cant understand the words, i am going to buy external speakers to enhance the sound...controls are easy to understand, packaging was excellent, Amazon delivery was amazing...very satisfied. -- GREAT TV WITH A FEW FLAWS
I got this new TV for under $600 at H H Greg. Picture is not as bright as some LCD TV but actually I like it. It is more like a movie mode. The contract ratio is very good. Color is accurate with some adjustment. Sound is great. It auto dim when your room is dark when eco mode is on. The only minor issue is when switching channel. It shows some pixilation when switching channel at the first second and then back to normal.... HD channels are wonderful. SD channel is just average. I will let my son to try his xbox later. I am testing this TV in basement and he does not know yet :-) I know Plasma use more electricity but for a 50" TV under $600, I can't resist.... The TV base also can not turn.... The remote button is good size for old man like me to use. This TV has a 1080p version and cost $299 more (since I paid less than $600), I don't think I can see difference between 702p and 1080p. I have no problem to install the base. The 4 screws are tight and I need to try to match the hole with each screw (because one screw seems a little bigger). Make sure you don't tighten each screw initially. Only tighten all 4 screws after they go it properly. It took me about 20 minutes to install the base by myself. No other problem so far. -- Best TV for the money

User Reviews about Samsung PN50C550 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black)

I bought this from Amazon a couple of months ago and it waited patiently in its box until our building work progressed sufficiently that it could be hung on the wall.

First of all, this is an attractive set, looks great, looks more expensive than it is and is very minimalistic - which suits us perfectly. The picture as others have described is superb.

We have ours hooked up to a Harmon Kardon AV system will all inputs via that AV amp (TIVO HD, Blu-Ray). Thus we just use 1 HDMI connection to the TV. All controlled with a Harmony remote.

The killer app for this TV though is that you can hook it up to your home network. Either via Samsungs own Wifi device or via Ethernet. I chose the latter as streaming video via WIFI has been temperamental at best in my experience.

The TV automatically detects your media - in our case via Windows Media Center (on a Windows 7 machine) and via Playon software installed on another (do a search to find it). This software allows you to access Hulu and other internet content (including Netflix). Sound is output from the TV to the amp via an optical cable (which might cause problems for those with older equipment). Works just great.

All in all a very pleasing purchase. -- Home Network Media
I've been reading reviews and visiting showrooms for months and I finally settled on this set. I originally wanted the new LED set, but the picture quality was too "real". It had fake over-exaggerated color. Plus, Plasma is still the best technology for delivering motion. (sports and games) This set is very real to life. Yes, you can tweak the settings, but there is no need to. The out of the box settings are great for average watchers. Connect this TV to an Anynet+ capable Bluray player and you're in heaven. I didn't even have to use the remote that came with the TV. Once connected to an Anynet+ device, you can control all your units without reprogramming. Just a smart tv. This model is also about 20lbs lighter than the B series. It's also perfect for anyone not wanting to deal with all the new "widgets", but if you want, you can use the Samsung Link Stick with it for the All Share feature and if you've got a new Samsung Bluray, it will have all those internet features anyway. That is why this set is at such an amazing price. Also 4HDMI ports. Can't beat it. The speakers are surprisingly good. I usually have my home theater on at all times, and the other night, I had it off and played with the "Virtual Surround Sound" settings in the very easy to use TV menu, and I'm impressed. All and all, a great value. Way better than the LED my brother got that had me drueling. Watch out when viewing on showroom floors though, they dim the color settings on this set to pursuade you to a superbright LED LCD. -- Quality and Value. A must buy.
I never give 5 star reviews on this site but I will for this TV. I think it is a great value and the picture quality is excellent. When I saw it come up with a great price I jumped on it. It has a terrific picture that can't be beat by any LCD TV I've seen. There is NO WAY you are going to find an LCD TV at this price in 50" at all. If you did, it definitely will not have nearly as good picture quality. And it's doubtful you'll find a plasma that can match this for under $1500, let alone at the price I paid and in a respected brand like Samsung. It has great colors, especially the warm colors. My Phillies and Eagles look amazing in HD on this and the refresh speed is fast. The swivel base is an important feature that I use every day in my loft apartment. It may not have every feature but it has more than enough adjustments to satisfy most people out there. Right out of the box it looked great and really impressed my friends. Once I got this TV I no longer even flip onto non-HD channels.

I don't use the speakers. A TV like this belongs in a legit home theater setup! There may be some glare if you have giant 12' loft windows like me... but who is home during the day anyway? This model does not run too hot if that concerns you, and I do not notice any buzz at all. I think the "C" model improved on these issues from the otherwise great "B" model. The glass front really looks sharp too.

The ONE caveat I have with this television is image retention. This is inherent with any plasma, not just Samsung. I sometimes will leave a PS3 game on pause, or watch the same channel with logos on the corner of the screen for hours on end. This can leave a retained image on portions of the screen, which eventually goes away. It is most noticeable when watching a dark movie. If you are an avid gamer or you have kids who are not mindful of the inherent issues with plasmas then I suggest an LCD. Make sure you turn the letter box to gray and be mindful not to leave stuff on pause. Also make sure not to turn off the pixel shift, ever. -- Highly recommended and a great value!
I am a big fan of Samsung products, but I am going to give this TV just "OK". My mother has a beautiful Samsung LCD that has awesome picture. I expected similar quality from this plasma. I guess you get what you pay for. The picture is not terrible, but the colors are dull. The blacks are not black, like many reviewers have boasted. The whites are not white either, which is not expected from plasma, but I wanted deep blacks. In dark scenes, a lot of detail is lost which is very annoying. My living room has average lighting - there is glare present, but it is not unbearable. Basically, I am disappointed in the contrast range of this television. The blacks are dark grey and the whites are light grey. My mother's LCD has WHITE whites and the blacks are as black as the trim of the television. The picture on my set is clear, and I do not hear the buzzing that other reviewers have complained about. I am also disappointed in the lack of features. No netflix or other apps on this set. Now, I have to buy a blu-ray with apps. I wish I would have just spent more on a TV. My mom's TV is the Samsung LN55B650 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color. It is the most awesome TV I have ever seen. Twice the price, but also twice the TV. I will buy LCD or LED next time. I have heard others recommend the Panasonic plasma in the same price range - that the blacks are actually black. Overall, just ok TV - so 3 stars. -- Just OK - Not what I expected from Samsung

User Reviews about Samsung PN42C450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV (Black)

September 28, 2010. CEVA delivered my new 42" Samsung plasma HDTV yesterday. Completely intact, no damage.

Opening the box is easy. This is a one-person set-up really. Not difficult at all.

Open the box. Remove the paperwork and the two parts of the stand. Then pull the TV out of the box and lay it face down with the shipping gray cover on it. Assemble the two stand parts. Then assemble the stand to the TV.

That's pretty much it.

About the screws: These are self-tapping metal screws that seat themselves in a plastic hole. They are not difficult to insert if you have a regular Phillips screwdriver that fits the screw heads. I used one of these to start them and them seated most of the remaining screws with a cordless drill with a Phillips bit. Two of the screws were too close to the stand to be tightened with the drill, but hand tightening was easy. This is a 3 or 4 on a scale of 10 handyman job. Don't let the stand chatter discourage you away from this fantastic buy of a TV.

Lift the TV up and set it on your television stand. Remove the gray cover and the plastic on the screen surround and the base. Plug it in and you are ready to go. Samsung's instant set-up found all my channels quickly.

The factory plasma setting for contrast and color density were fine for me. I did add deeper blacks (one of the reasons I like plasma screens) and then switched the speakers to simulated surround. This is all done easily in the menu.

Sound is better than any TV I have owned and certainly enough for most people who do not have or want a sound system.

The picture is amazing. No buzzing.

I first watched large parts of "Chinatown" and "Patriot Games" on cable broadcasts and was immediately in love with this set. A FIOS On-Demand HD "Mad Men" episode was next. Wonderful.

I watched some of Monday Night football -- no motion blur or pixelation. And I watched the HD PBS news report, and an On-Demand "Jules After Dark" segment with Warren Zevon and Joe Strummer: concert footage was terrific and the sound just fine.

This is my first HDTV. My daughter has a nice (and larger) 2010 Samsung LED model. It seems to lose color for off axis viewers and be a bit washed out in some color zones even head-on (as if it was not giving you all the colors of the scene, especially on faces at a medium distance). This plasma set overcomes all of that beautifully and appears so natural you find yourself smiling at the value and the fidelity of the product.

I prefer this plasma set over the LED (which is about 3X the cost).

About the glare and the glass screen. We have this in our basement media room in between a pair of sliding glass doors and a window. At night there are no issues. During the day this actually appears to work better than the regular flat screen Sony XBR TV it replaced. We have found it easier to view (regardless of sun), but we placed it so the sun was at its back. Not a big deal at all as to reflections.

Is 42" enough? We view it at 8 - 12 foot distances. It's plenty close and huge and brilliantly colorful and clear. A bigger room might call for a larger set. And I think this might be too big for a bedroom set also.

Bottom line: It's gorgeous. Easy to use and set up. TV is exciting again here.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy plasma, and what a deal this set is on all fronts.
-- Unbelievably Nice. Great Value. Perfect Picture and Sound.
Although more of an audiophile than a video fanatic, this TV is beautiful(even when it's off :D) and meets my needs at a more than acceptable price point. Contrary to previous reviews, there is no annoying buzzing(even without firmware update).

My only complaints are that the menu's don't automatically go off after a few seconds of inactivity(could be me, is there an option for this?) and that the remote is hideous and about as awkward as watching a porno with your grandparents. This abomination of a remote control resembles a black toucan and is about as ergonomic and balanced as a chihuahua. I don't know what Samsung was thinking when they created these Picasso inspired travesties, but they should do the world a favor and burn the molds , put the ashes in a titanium safe, kill whoever knows the combination and launch them into the center of the Sun. -- B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L
I did a lot of research for this TV and the only bad things i found were problems dealing with the Samsung Customer Service. We have had this TV for only a month but the picture is great! It was a gift for my husband and he too, is impressed! We have 3 large TV's in our home and this one. even though its the smallest of the three, is the nicest! -- Awesome TV !!!!!!
I have to say that I'm very impressed with the quality of this TV. The sound is good and the picture is beautiful. It was very easy to put together and took only minutes once it was out of the box for us to have it up and running. That's not bad for a $500 TV!

The LCD TV's work better for brightly lit rooms but I much prefer the picture quality on a Plasma. -- Excellent Value For Your Money
$500 for a 42 inch Samsung Plasma (even though it's only 720p) is pretty fantastic. That being said here's a little more info after 3 days of using the tv.

When the tv is on there is a very loud noticeable buzz. Luckily the tv speakers are very loud and can over-power this buzzing. However if for some reason you are listening to something with a low volume, you're gonna hear the buzzing. I often have the volume low either because my child is sleeping or because I'm trying to sleep, so this isn't the greatest match for me.

The picture with a regular antenna on an HD basic tv feed is awesome. Looks great. Better than my 46 inch Toshiba 1080i LCD. (Oddly enough, my LCD buzzes when it's off, not on, so go figure.)

When running a PS3 via HDMI cable, either playing a game or watching a blu-ray, not the best picture, but this tv has a lot of options for tweaking the picture. Dark images seem to be too dark and brights, too bright. But there is a "game mode" and "movie Mode". Great sound though.

So far not bad. Stylish design. Thin frame. Light-weight. Lots of tweaking options. $500 for a brand name HDTV in the 40 inch range is very good. This makes a great auxilary tv (I'm using mine in the bedroom) and decent main Tv. Let's just hope it lasts a long time. -- Loud buzz when on, great picture with regular antenna, etc...
