User Reviews about Samsung PN50C550 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black)
I bought this from Amazon a couple of months ago and it waited patiently in its box until our building work progressed sufficiently that it could be hung on the wall.
First of all, this is an attractive set, looks great, looks more expensive than it is and is very minimalistic - which suits us perfectly. The picture as others have described is superb.
We have ours hooked up to a Harmon Kardon AV system will all inputs via that AV amp (TIVO HD, Blu-Ray). Thus we just use 1 HDMI connection to the TV. All controlled with a Harmony remote.
The killer app for this TV though is that you can hook it up to your home network. Either via Samsungs own Wifi device or via Ethernet. I chose the latter as streaming video via WIFI has been temperamental at best in my experience.
The TV automatically detects your media - in our case via Windows Media Center (on a Windows 7 machine) and via Playon software installed on another (do a search to find it). This software allows you to access Hulu and other internet content (including Netflix). Sound is output from the TV to the amp via an optical cable (which might cause problems for those with older equipment). Works just great.
All in all a very pleasing purchase. -- Home Network Media
I've been reading reviews and visiting showrooms for months and I finally settled on this set. I originally wanted the new LED set, but the picture quality was too "real". It had fake over-exaggerated color. Plus, Plasma is still the best technology for delivering motion. (sports and games) This set is very real to life. Yes, you can tweak the settings, but there is no need to. The out of the box settings are great for average watchers. Connect this TV to an Anynet+ capable Bluray player and you're in heaven. I didn't even have to use the remote that came with the TV. Once connected to an Anynet+ device, you can control all your units without reprogramming. Just a smart tv. This model is also about 20lbs lighter than the B series. It's also perfect for anyone not wanting to deal with all the new "widgets", but if you want, you can use the Samsung Link Stick with it for the All Share feature and if you've got a new Samsung Bluray, it will have all those internet features anyway. That is why this set is at such an amazing price. Also 4HDMI ports. Can't beat it. The speakers are surprisingly good. I usually have my home theater on at all times, and the other night, I had it off and played with the "Virtual Surround Sound" settings in the very easy to use TV menu, and I'm impressed. All and all, a great value. Way better than the LED my brother got that had me drueling. Watch out when viewing on showroom floors though, they dim the color settings on this set to pursuade you to a superbright LED LCD. -- Quality and Value. A must buy.
I never give 5 star reviews on this site but I will for this TV. I think it is a great value and the picture quality is excellent. When I saw it come up with a great price I jumped on it. It has a terrific picture that can't be beat by any LCD TV I've seen. There is NO WAY you are going to find an LCD TV at this price in 50" at all. If you did, it definitely will not have nearly as good picture quality. And it's doubtful you'll find a plasma that can match this for under $1500, let alone at the price I paid and in a respected brand like Samsung. It has great colors, especially the warm colors. My Phillies and Eagles look amazing in HD on this and the refresh speed is fast. The swivel base is an important feature that I use every day in my loft apartment. It may not have every feature but it has more than enough adjustments to satisfy most people out there. Right out of the box it looked great and really impressed my friends. Once I got this TV I no longer even flip onto non-HD channels.
I don't use the speakers. A TV like this belongs in a legit home theater setup! There may be some glare if you have giant 12' loft windows like me... but who is home during the day anyway? This model does not run too hot if that concerns you, and I do not notice any buzz at all. I think the "C" model improved on these issues from the otherwise great "B" model. The glass front really looks sharp too.
The ONE caveat I have with this television is image retention. This is inherent with any plasma, not just Samsung. I sometimes will leave a PS3 game on pause, or watch the same channel with logos on the corner of the screen for hours on end. This can leave a retained image on portions of the screen, which eventually goes away. It is most noticeable when watching a dark movie. If you are an avid gamer or you have kids who are not mindful of the inherent issues with plasmas then I suggest an LCD. Make sure you turn the letter box to gray and be mindful not to leave stuff on pause. Also make sure not to turn off the pixel shift, ever. -- Highly recommended and a great value!
I am a big fan of Samsung products, but I am going to give this TV just "OK". My mother has a beautiful Samsung LCD that has awesome picture. I expected similar quality from this plasma. I guess you get what you pay for. The picture is not terrible, but the colors are dull. The blacks are not black, like many reviewers have boasted. The whites are not white either, which is not expected from plasma, but I wanted deep blacks. In dark scenes, a lot of detail is lost which is very annoying. My living room has average lighting - there is glare present, but it is not unbearable. Basically, I am disappointed in the contrast range of this television. The blacks are dark grey and the whites are light grey. My mother's LCD has WHITE whites and the blacks are as black as the trim of the television. The picture on my set is clear, and I do not hear the buzzing that other reviewers have complained about. I am also disappointed in the lack of features. No netflix or other apps on this set. Now, I have to buy a blu-ray with apps. I wish I would have just spent more on a TV. My mom's TV is the Samsung LN55B650 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color. It is the most awesome TV I have ever seen. Twice the price, but also twice the TV. I will buy LCD or LED next time. I have heard others recommend the Panasonic plasma in the same price range - that the blacks are actually black. Overall, just ok TV - so 3 stars. -- Just OK - Not what I expected from Samsung
